This machine has NO wired ethernet connection.This is the same machine and same usb wireless adapter that was working fine on this machine just before the hard drive failed two days ago and I reinstalled. So I know it can work. But the first time I made it work I was on a wired network.

usb adapter comes back as obda:0811 which I believe is Realtek rtl8812au. I have done some googling and I have downloaded and unzipped 3 different drivers from github. The last time I put the unzipped folder in the /usr/src directory, then right click and open in terminal, then run make and sudo make install. There were no errors, but still no connection.
There is no secure boot in this machine's bios. I get wi-fi networks (including my own wi-fi ssid) showing strength as high as 85% or even 89%, I have the correct wi-fi password and the connection is using wpa2 personal security, dhcp, etc. But the status is always 'connecting' and a window pops up repeatedly saying I must authenticate. But when I re-input the pwd it never connects and I never get internet, even though it always shows a wireless strength of about 80%. It even sees other wireless ssid's in the vicinity of my house.
As you know, this machine is a paperweight without a working wireless connection. How do I get this wireless working without having a wired ethernet connection to the www? (I am typing this on my wireless Windows machine in the next room)
